Getting Down

The B-24 pilots were highly trained and then pushed to the limits of their training. Different techniques were taught for landing with various problems. There were methods for landing without brakes, without a nosewheel, without any wheels, landing on water, etc. They were not methods that could be practiced except in emergencies. Sometimes they didn't work too well. Airplanes that staggered back to base with missing engines or broken parts were difficult to put back on the ground in one piece.

The pilots were in part selected for their ability to take responsibility for the welfare of the entire crew and for the proper care and safe return of the ship.
